Apple VP Discusses iPhone Duo Crease and Hinge Design

Apple hardware engineering vice president Tom Marieb recently discussed the upcoming iPhone Duo in an interview with TechRadar, addressing questions about the foldable device's display crease and hinge mechanism.

The new device incorporates a matte nano-texture screen designed to reduce glare and make the folding crease less noticeable. According to Marieb, consumers should hold Apple accountable regarding how visible the crease remains as the device ages, noting that the matte finish is more forgiving of structural shifts over time compared to glossy alternatives.

Display and Hinge Engineering

Marieb highlighted the hinge as a component he feels particularly proud of, explaining that the development team spent a significant amount of time refining its mechanics. The goal was to create a durable mechanism that feels solid and secure during daily use.

Engineers focused heavily on the torque profile to ensure the hardware feels sturdy when opened and closed, comparing the intended tactile feedback to the door of a luxury car. This design approach aims to reassure users about the build quality and safety of the device.

Modes and Availability

To avoid a loose or floppy feel, the hinge was tuned to support multiple positions, including fully open, completely closed, and partially folded states for use while seated or standing.
