Bungie Plans to Restore Vaulted Content in Destiny 2

Bungie is undoing a controversial policy that stripped older material out of Destiny 2 six years ago. According to a report by The Verge, the studio intends to bring back destinations, campaigns, and raids that were previously locked away from the player base.

When the developer initially created the content vault, it removed paid expansions and maps, drawing heavy criticism from the community. Bungie recently addressed that friction, stating that the prior cuts negatively affected player satisfaction and trust. While the company cannot undo the past choice, it wants to fix the situation by returning key pieces of the game's history.

Restoring Older Content Will Take Time

Bringing these old areas back is not a quick fix. Significant technical updates occurred when the Beyond Light expansion launched, meaning the studio must update lighting, enemies, encounters, and core systems for the older material.

This restoration effort ensures that returning locations match modern performance and stability standards. All players will eventually gain access to the restored additions, though developers warned that the engineering work requires patience.

Broader Changes for Bungie Studios

The announcement follows the recent emergence of an offline preservation mod named Sunrise, which granted fans access to certain archived spaces. However, that mod did not restore the full narrative missions.

Bungie framed this revival project as a foundational step toward future storytelling. Despite community discussions and fan requests on Twitch regarding a potential third installment, the studio made no mention of a sequel, focusing instead on long-term sustainability.

Alongside these updates, the company addressed its upcoming extraction shooter, Marathon. Admitting that the title fell short of audience goals, leadership stated that Marathon will shift toward a deeper survival format. The studio noted that the project requires substantial evolution to attract a larger player base and remain viable moving forward.
