Grand Theft Auto 5 Mod Adds Functional Hot Dog Vendors
A community modification for Grand Theft Auto 5 restores working food stalls, allowing characters to buy snacks and recover health.
Grand Theft Auto 5 players can now purchase food from street stands thanks to a modification that restores a feature absent from the base release. In the retail edition of the title, vendor carts scatter the map as mere scenery, leaving users unable to interact with the stall operators.
The new script was highlighted by PC Gamer as part of a series covering daily modifications to the PC version of the game. That ongoing project aims to test whether cumulative community add-ons will modernize the open-world title or cause the software to crash under the weight of conflicting files.
In Grand Theft Auto 4, players were routinely able to stop at street carts to purchase food items. Rockstar Games did not bring that purchase mechanic into the fifth installment, leaving carts throughout Los Santos—including those along the coastline—completely non-functional.
With the modification applied, players can walk up to a vendor near the beach in Los Santos and spend five dollars on a hot dog. Just like food items in previous entries, eating the meal restores lost health to the player's character.
Chaotic Compatibility with Other Scripts
The food vendor mod was tested alongside several other active community scripts, leading to unusual in-game situations. One active script in the test environment was designed to randomly teleport the player across the map at unexpected moments.
During one transaction, the player initiated the food purchase and was abruptly moved to the peak of the hillside sign overlooking Los Santos. The character continued the full eating sequence uninterrupted despite standing high above the city.
At the same time, another active script giving the character celebrity status caused newly spawned bodyguards to appear in empty air around the high-altitude sign, sending them falling to their deaths.
The experimenter expressed hope that Rockstar Games will include functional food vendors natively in Grand Theft Auto 6, given the scale and budget of the upcoming release. For now, PC players continue to rely on individual community add-ons to reintroduce mechanics that vanished after the franchise's fourth mainline title.
