Apple Watch Series 12 Launches With New Health Sensors
The new Apple Watch Series 12 brings faster internals, higher sensor sampling rates, and a starting price of $399.
Apple has officially released the Apple Watch Series 12, according to an initial test published by MacRumors. While the exterior design remains unchanged from recent iterations, the latest wearable focuses on internal hardware improvements and upgraded health tracking capabilities.
Buyers will not notice any visual differences from the front when comparing the Series 11 to the new device. However, modifications are visible on the rear casing where the hardware has been refreshed.
Health Sensing System and Performance
The device features a new Health Sensing System driven by an S11 processor. This new chip offers faster performance compared to the S10 processor found in the previous model.
Apple stated that the updated hardware makes this the most precise heart rate tracking wearable the company has produced. Measurement frequency has increased significantly, with heart rate readings taken every five seconds. Additionally, heart rate variability is now measured as frequently as once every five minutes.
A new readiness score feature relies on this collected data, analyzing sleep patterns, vitals, and recent activity levels. This metric updates dynamically throughout the day to advise users whether to exercise intensely or rest. The readiness score requires approximately one week of continuous data collection before it begins functioning.
Battery Life and Charging Improvements
Despite the increased sampling frequency, early testing indicates that battery drain is not excessive. The hardware maintains its rated all-day battery life while introducing quicker charging capabilities.
A 15-minute charge can now deliver up to 12 hours of normal usage. Achieving this higher charging speed requires using the specific charger included in the box with the Series 12, as older chargers do not support the feature.
The S11 chip will also support upcoming software functions named Live Rewind and Siri Recap, which are scheduled for release later in the year.
Pricing and Upgrade Recommendations
The Series 12 is available in two case sizes, measuring 42mm and 46mm. Retail pricing starts at $399.
Current owners of the Series 10 or Series 11 may find little reason to upgrade given the lack of a visual redesign. However, consumers using older models might find the new health sensors and performance upgrades a worthwhile change.
