Marvel’s Wolverine Reports Point to Regional Censorship of Mystique

Social media content suggests that Insomniac Games and Sony have altered regional versions of Marvel’s Wolverine in the Middle East to eliminate references to a same-sex marriage involving the character Mystique and her partner Tyger.

As reported by Kotaku, users on platforms like X and Reddit have shared images and video footage pointing to these specific narrative changes. In several countries across the Middle East, same-sex relationships are illegal and can carry severe legal penalties, including the death penalty.

Evidence Shared Online

Among the circulated items is a social media reply featuring a redacted picture from a wedding day. Another user shared an image of a redacted letter that discusses the relationship between the two characters.

A video posted to the r/PlayWolverine subreddit provides additional examples. The creator of the post initially suspected a technical bug before concluding the omissions were intentional.

Audio evidence in the clip indicates that spoken lines mentioning a wife have been edited out, though ambient background audio continues to play during the cuts.

Prior Regional Changes

This is not the first instance of regional content alteration by Sony and Insomniac Games. Previous releases, such as Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, saw similar changes in parts of the Middle East.

That earlier title had Pride flags removed from the game world, and a side mission involving a young gay couple was modified to take out explicit references to their relationship.

Kotaku has contacted Sony for a statement regarding the apparent changes in Marvel’s Wolverine.
