Qualcomm Reveals Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 Chips
Qualcomm unveiled two new flagship processors for future Android phones at a recent product launch event.
Qualcomm has officially revealed its latest mobile processors, introducing the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 and the Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 to drive upcoming Android smartphones.
According to reporting by 9to5Google, the company chose to split its flagship tier into two distinct products this year in order to provide device makers with a wider selection of hardware options.
Both new processors are manufactured using a 2-nanometer production method. They utilize an Oryon central processing unit containing a pair of 5-gigahertz prime cores paired with six 4-gigahertz performance cores.
Performance and Efficiency Gains
The standard Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 delivers a 10 percent boost in CPU capabilities along with a 37 percent improvement in power efficiency relative to the preceding generation.
Meanwhile, the higher-tier Extreme variant pushes CPU output up by 13 percent over the previous generation. It also incorporates a global VVC codec designed to handle video tasks more efficiently.
Graphics capabilities see significant upgrades through a redesigned Adreno graphics processing unit. The base chip achieves a 35 percent rise in GPU performance alongside a 40 percent jump in power efficiency.
The Extreme model features dedicated Adreno matrix cores that support complex AI models, pushing its GPU performance up by 44 percent. It also includes 18 megabytes of high-performance memory.
Artificial Intelligence and Camera Updates
The Hexagon neural processing unit features a new element accelerator tailored for transformer workloads. The standard configuration yields a 14 percent jump in NPU performance and a 20 percent gain in efficiency per watt.
The Extreme edition boasts a shared memory bank that is 50 percent larger, permitting the operation of mixture of experts models exceeding 30 billion parameters while cutting down external memory access.
Camera hardware receives updates via the Spectra image signal processor, which includes intelligent pixel control for pixel-level scene analysis. The Extreme variant supports video capture at 8K resolution at 60 frames per second, as well as 4K slow motion at 240 frames per second.
Both processors incorporate the new Qualcomm X105 5G modem, featuring support for 3GPP Release 19 5G Advanced. Following the announcement, Motorola revealed that its upcoming Signature 27 smartphone will utilize the Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 processor.
