Xbox Chief Rules Out Sale Amid Deep Company Restructuring

Xbox will remain part of its parent organization, according to chief executive Asha Sharma, who addressed persistent buyout rumors in a recent interview. Eurogamer reported that the executive firmly dismissed the possibility of a sale while outlining ongoing changes within the gaming division.

The company is currently executing a corporate reset that involves reducing headcount by a total of 3,200 positions ahead of next summer. This workforce reduction has already led to independent status for three developer teams, specifically Double Fine, Compulsion Games, and Undead Labs. Meanwhile, the future direction for Ninja Theory and Arkane has not been clarified.

Further structural changes occurred earlier this month when control of the Halo franchise transferred to Activision. Additional organizational shifts placed Rare and World's Edge under the same publisher, while Obsidian Entertainment moved into the Bethesda division. Consequently, the remaining internal developer roster features The Coalition, Playground Games, Mojang, InXile Entertainment, and the trimmed-down Halo Studios.

Understanding the Restructure

Industry observers previously speculated that these consolidation efforts might be preparing the division for a prospective acquisition. Bundling historically significant brands alongside massive properties like Call of Duty could theoretically simplify a massive corporate transaction.

Sharma rejected those theories during a conversation with The New York Times, stating that the brand is not available for purchase. She emphasized a commitment to doing whatever is necessary to reach profitability, which includes evaluating operating models and forming appropriate business alliances.

While a direct sale has been denied, analysts point out that the statements do not explicitly eliminate the prospect of spinning off the division into a separate company that maintains ties to Microsoft. For now, leadership maintains that a long-term collaborative relationship with the parent corporation remains the primary path forward.

Upcoming Releases and Projects

Attention now shifts to upcoming software releases meant to drive hardware engagement. The division is pinning immediate hopes on upcoming console exclusives, including next week's launch of Gears of War: E-Day and next year's Clockwork Revolution from InXile.

Leadership is also looking outward for new content partnerships. Sharma recently secured an agreement with Kojima Productions to support the action-stealth title Physint after PlayStation withdrew financial backing from the venture.
