Leaked Video Reveals Mass Effect: Universe After BioWare Closure
A leaked video for an unannounced game called Mass Effect: Universe has surfaced online following the closure of BioWare.

A leaked two-minute video showcasing an unannounced project titled Mass Effect: Universe has appeared online, surfacing immediately after the closure of BioWare. The unexpected leak sheds light on how far work had actually progressed on the sci-fi sequel, providing context for fans who were left wondering why Mass Effect 5 was still described as being in early development five years after its initial 2020 announcement.
The recording opens with a disclaimer explaining that its contents were assembled by a limited crew using assets from pre-production. Across the brief runtime, viewers meet a new male lead character. While this protagonist once belonged to the exact same organization Commander Shepard served in and exhibits several clear similarities to the former hero, he is presented as an entirely different person.
Liara T'Soni also appears during the leaked sequence. Her presence provides clues regarding the timeline, suggesting the events might take place shortly after the conclusion of the first trilogy. Liara is an Asari, an extraterrestrial species recognized for having exceptionally long lifespans, meaning her inclusion does not automatically place the story centuries into the future.
Gameplay Systems and Visual Elements
The footage puts several of the franchise's traditional hallmarks on display. Viewers can spot romance sequences, recognizable alien races such as the Krogan, supernatural biotic talents, and the franchise's signature galaxy map interface used for planetary travel.
Beyond returning systems, the demonstration indicates that combat was receiving significant updates. While the core action feels recognizable to series veterans, the video highlights brand-new close-quarters combat maneuvers alongside coordinated biotic combos. These additions appear designed to quicken combat pacing and raise the intensity of hostile encounters.
Assessing the Legitimacy of the Leak
Although the material could not be independently confirmed by Polygon, several details point toward the clip being genuine. The audio appears to feature legitimate voice performers who contributed to past installments of the franchise. Furthermore, the visuals do not display the telltale indicators commonly found in artificial intelligence creations, making a digital hoax seem unlikely.
The contents of the video also align with recent reports surrounding the project's internal health. Developers reportedly attached to the title had maintained that they resolved initial design hurdles to craft a quality experience. Those accounts were echoed by an alleged Electronic Arts worker, who claimed on LinkedIn that Mass Effect 5 was already completed and prepared for release before the studio met its end.
