Valve Audio Designer Mentions Unannounced 'HLX' Project at Industry Event
A Valve sound designer referenced the rumored 'HLX' codename during a GameSoundCon panel on audio systems.

A Valve employee has explicitly uttered the codename "HLX" during an audio presentation, giving new momentum to long-running theories about an unannounced Half-Life title. Valve composer and sound artist Mike Morasky dropped the term during an appearance at GameSoundCon.
The remark surfaced while Morasky discussed how Valve manages simultaneous sound limits and dynamic range processing across various game builds. In the middle of his explanation, he noted that Deadlock employs a dedicated HDR audio setup, quickly adding that HLX relies on its own separate implementation.
Fellow panelist David Feise reacted on the spot. Sitting alongside Morasky, Feise offered a muted response that seemed intended to caution his colleague, before abruptly steering the presentation away from the topic. At the conclusion of the talk, Feise jokingly commended Morasky for letting the term slip out only a single time.
The History Behind the Codename
The label carries significant weight among fans tracking Valve's internal projects. Digital strings containing the moniker originally appeared inside a Counter-Strike 2 patch released in early 2024. Observers quickly connected the naming format to "HLVR," the working handle Valve used throughout the creation of Half-Life: Alyx.
This conference appearance marks the first instance of a studio representative speaking the designation out loud. A near-miss happened in 2025, when Morasky began pronouncing the letters before shifting course to reference Alyx instead. As covered by PC Gamer, the continued recurrence of the term keeps speculation alive, following earlier analysis from editor Tyler Wilde suggesting a new Half-Life reveal might emerge in the near term.
Uncertainty Surrounding Valve's Plans
Despite the spoken reference, concrete details about what the project actually entails remain completely unknown. Observers cannot yet confirm whether the designation points toward a fully fledged Half-Life sequel, an experimental tech showcase, or an internal development suite.
Valve itself has not published any confirmation regarding future franchise entries or explained the context of the conference remarks. The full presentation has been uploaded to Vimeo, leaving players to speculate whether the leaked designation will ever materialize into a public game announcement.
