Samsung Galaxy S27 Could Finally Bring DC Dimming Support

Rumors indicate that the upcoming Samsung Galaxy S27 might introduce DC dimming support, a change that could provide significant relief for smartphone users who suffer from physical discomfort due to pulse-width modulation. According to a report by 9to5Google, this potential hardware shift addresses a long-standing issue for individuals who experience migraines, eye strain, and nausea when using modern OLED panels.

Many consumers have reported difficulty using Samsung mobile devices for extended periods over the years. Online communities and forums frequently discuss how low-frequency PWM dimming triggers adverse physical reactions. While competing brands like Motorola have utilized DC dimming across their OLED lineups for years, major manufacturers have been slower to make the transition.

Why Samsung Relies on PWM Dimming

Samsung has historically favored PWM dimming for several specific reasons tied to manufacturing, quality, and power consumption.

  • Visual Quality: PWM dimming maintains better consistency at low brightness levels. DC-dimmed OLED panels can suffer from uneven pixel dimming, resulting in a noisy display appearance.
  • Energy Efficiency: Pulse-width modulation is loosely linked to better battery retention, a factor that mattered greatly as Samsung fell behind competitors in battery development.
  • Manufacturing Costs: PWM dimming is generally managed through software. In contrast, DC dimming typically requires additional hardware components to regulate voltage, increasing production costs per unit.

Despite these technical advantages, none of these benefits matter to consumers who are entirely excluded from using Samsung devices due to health issues. While other major tech companies like Apple and Google have made adjustments to accommodate sensitive users, they have not fully adopted DC dimming.

What This Means for the Market

If the rumors surrounding the Galaxy S27 prove accurate, it will mark a major shift for Samsung's flagship line. Without this adoption, Motorola would remain the primary flagship option in the United States offering native DC dimming technology, especially as other competitors have pulled back from the US market.
